i have some conifers to reduce in height but when i did 1 a few years ago it died,how do i stop the tree from dieing once i have cut it?

They will always die if you cut into the older woody parts - they just don't rejuvenate from that old wood.
To prune them you need to make sure you cut into newer growth and not that old woody growth, that way it will rejuvenate.
