Looks like a currant of some sort. Does that ring any bells Ladygardener?

If possible you get it into the ground. Google 'growing gooseberries'

I would first of all fasten it to a stake to encourage it to grow upright, and eventually remove the lower branches so that the bush will grow on a short "leg". It will be better planted in the ground somewhere where the thorns won't matter. The main pruning/training is usually done in February so you have lots of time to encourage a nice healthy plant and look up care details !
Congratulations and happy eating, eventually!
