I have 25 dutch iris bulbs here which I want to plant now. Theyve got shoots of about 1 inch. On the planting instructions it says to plant 4 inches deep, this will cover the shoots. Shall I plant them as instucted or leave the shoots above ground.

exactly what MG has said - burying the shoot will force it to grow upwards and the depth stabilise it when it flowers.

Tell me about it 20˚+ at the weekend now back to 10˚. It is rather late to be planting the irises so be patient if they don't flower this year… ours are flowering in the garden now and have been for several weeks.

Plant at 4 inches deep as stated on the bag, the shoots will grow up and surface without a problem.
