how can i get rid of a buttercup type weed that spreads like mad

You have three options
1. dig it out very thoroughly and keep doing so until it is gone or
2. Cover it with a weed supressing membrane or a piece of carpet and eventually it will die or
3.. Spray it with a systemic herbicide such as roundup. which will kill it all the way down to the roots.
