I have just purchased a Japanese Acer palmatum, a tree in poor condition The tree I feel is salvageable but what do I do about the moss on the surface of the pot, which appears to be choking or filtering the ericasious feed? Shall I clear the moss or will it be too big a shock to the tree?

I think I would not only remove the moss , I would repot it in a new slightly bigger pot ( or in the garden ) with good compost and lots of watering and give it a fresh start.
