Is moss surrounding a plant in a plant pot good or bad?

I have just bought a small Bay to replace my winter casualty. The purchased pot has huge mossy fruiting bodies the plant however looks in fine fettle. I think I'll get rid of all the moss though as I really don't need any more - my lawn has enough!

I agree with Inverglen as moss is a sign of damp/shade

Moss/lichen on top of the compost in pots usually indicates a need for repotting, or refreshing of compost - means its been in the same pot, unattended, for too long.

I have been repotting some of my pot plants recently and found that those with moss were too wet and it seemed to be a sign that they had needed the repotting to improve the compost and the drainage.
