You have to decide which of the two causes I've mentioned it is - are the dead blossoms still clinging to the tree, not falling? Any signs of problems with the twigs or stems they're hanging from (brown/black discoloration or anything else)?

no the branches are ok no discolouration

And has the blossom dropped off, or is it still sitting there, shrivelled up?

Hi
The buds are still on the tree black and shrivelled, we are contemplating cutting them off and see what happens next year.what do you think?

Sounds like Blossom Wilt then - you must clip off all shrivelled blossoms, taking a short piece of the stem behind them as well, and any browning leaves or stems nearby. Next year, spray with a copper based treatment just before flowering.

thanks we will do that then and see what happens.

Could be one of two things - Blossom Wilt or Pedicel Necrosis. In the latter, the the thin stem/s immediately behind the blossom rot and the blossom collapses, turns brown and drops off. In the first, the destroyed blossom remains on the tree, shrivelled and brown/black. The causes are different - Blossom Wilt is a fungal infection and treatment needs to be carried out - in the second, the cause is any of the following: drought conditions occurring while the blossom is out or excessive feeding of a product with a high nitrogen content, or even a sudden cold snap can produce this effect.
