neighbours leylandii trees have died and dead leaves are blowing onto the soil where I am about do some planting. Should I clear the dead leaves from the soil first or is it okay to leave them? I will be digging compost into the area before planting.

Clear them as far as is possible - they will have a mildly acidifying effect on the soil, but this shouldn't be a problem unless you're growing chalk lovers.
