sorry forgot to add that. The house is east facing and as the urns are next to the house they seem to get a bit of protection. The garden at the front does well for being this northerly but perhaps the railings round the garden protect it a bit? It gets sun till about 12 noon. Thankyou

We have a large stone trough next to our east facing back door in Moray. There are two difficulties: one, with the stone being so thick there is not room for a lot of compost in the trough. Secondly, the trough is rather under the eaves of the house so does not catch a lot of rain. Even in Aberdeenshire you will find it in the rainshadow of the house. We have planted ours up with sempervivum and sedum which look very attractive and will withstand these conditions.
