i have an area of bricks on the ground from where a horse and cart delivered milk.It is in a predominantly south facing area. Can I build raised beds on top of these bricks as getting them up is proving very arduous. If so how deep does the soil need to be to grow vegetables and are there vegetables that do not need soil more than about 12 inches deep. I would be grateful of any options

You'd need to make sure there's plenty of drainage holes or slits in the beds, but at a depth of 12 inches, you'd be restricted to salad type crops.
