Can anyone identify this? My work buddy bought it in today - he says it was taking over his garden and intermingled with a Lavender shrub. He says it was growing in dry soil (rockery stylee).

Could be something called Quaking Grass, very decorative and quite tough. The seed heads get bigger and rustle in the breeze.(Briza media).I let mine seed itself, easy to pull out if not wanted in certain places.

Sedge type of plant. Does your work buddy grow his/her plants in peat? Could have been in the peat.

I'd call it "grass" and heave it out as a weed.

Thanks chaps - I think I'll go with Briza Media, Quaking Grass - having now Googled the images. Bulbaholic - I'm not sure he'd know what peat was.....he's not a Gardener (shame on him)!
