can i cut back my mahonia as it has grown very tall, if so when is the best time to do it?.

Am guessing you mean Mahonia japonica.

I would prune it just as the flowers are fading (should be over the next few weeks if not now). Mahonias are fairly tough plants so you won't harm it. Cut to immediately above a leaf joint. You can prune branches out completely to reduce spread. They rebound quickly as June/July is their main growth period.
