I have a Timperley Early rhubarb crown growing in a large terracotta pot, but the stems are small and spindly. What should I do to get large chunky stems?

And if this is the crowns first year just let the stems grow away and don't use - they are needed to feed the crown.

It is about 3/4yrs old and has only produced 2-3 stems last year that I could say were decent. Should the top of the crown be covered?

Plant it in the ground, with a good dollop of well rotted manure or compost in the hole and keep mulched. Rhubarb needs a lot of food and does not, in my experience, do well in a pot.
