hello everyone i have just joined after reading and enjoying all your questions. i have 4 photinias seven years old this year all leaves have turned brown and dropped off will they recover or should i dig them up

They'll recover !

I have a few here too and they do that when they're short of moisture at the roots.

This dry season means getting the hosepipe out i'm afraid - give it a really good soaking once a week and those fallen leaves will be replaced.

Hello and welcome Rose my photina has gone the same way leaves went brown and dropped but new shoots starting to grow again.

So I would not be too hasty.

Leave the hosepipe on the ground and water it that way, don't stand over it with the spray because the soil will need a good soaking and you'll get cold and achey before it's had sufficient water !

I think it was Alan Titchmarsh that always said leave the hose on a slow-medium speed and allow 5 or 10 minutes each plant.
Do this at least once a week for a couple of weeks because the past 3 months have been exceptionally dry.
