Is it true that i should not plant potatoes and tomatoes close to each other, if so how far apart should they be?

It isn't so much that they hate each others company than it is that planting them close to each other increases the risk of blight which all of the solanum family is vulnerable to. Carrots are good to plant with tomatoes and potatoes though.
