Impossible question.
I'm looking to identify this iris that was already resident in the garden when we moved in. It would be nice to identify it but I know there are so many varieties that it will be virtually impossible. In addition the photo doesn't do it justice - the petals have a flush of pink on their outer surfaces - but this might help to narrow down the choices.

Not only are there 1,000's of official varieties, there are a large number of hybrids around without names at all.
It actually looks like one called Jane Phillips

The shape of the flower is like many from before 1960. Might be worth concentrating on the heirloom varieties.

Owdboggy, go to the top of the class - I googled Jane Phillips and it is spot on, a perfect match! My wife is also pleased to bits as her Mum's maiden name was Phillips. Several of the sites I looked also said it has a heavenly scent, so I buried my nose in it and they are dead right, so big smiles all round. You can chalk that one up as a big success, so thanks again :-)))). Bernard
