I'd noticed the same and put it down to the very cold winter. Here in Cornwall the slugs and snails are normally MUCH more numerous than they were when we lived near London. I'd always thought it was due to the mild winters here not killing them off as they do in other parts of the country.

Sorry to disappoint folks, but I doubt very much the population is less than it used to be - I've not seen a slug or snail here in West London for 2 months - but then we've had no rain for nearly 3 months. They need damp conditions to emerge, so they're there, just in hiding.

funny..I noticed this too...but I think you are right Bamboo...they are lurking...no doubt about it...they get right up the Palm trees in my border...got 2 this morning...can't believe this...quite a ways up
a right pain in the neck...needs constant vigilance

hmm i wonder , like you say it has been warm & dry , but lets see if this heavy rain brings the little scamps out to play lol

What heavy rain? Not had a drop here in West London. But I can report back that I found 7 seven snails lurking in a window box in a client's garden, and another 12 hiding behind the box itself.

oh yeah !!! dreadful...had an afternoon's worth of snails in a friend's garden....so glad to get home ...hate the bloody things !! Nothing but damage, destruction and they are vulgar in their appearance...what is the difference between snails and slugs...apart from the obvious - snails carry their home on their back...slugs don't...both a nightmare though

I can think of a lot worse things, Giroffle, lol!

I've called slugs and snails many things, but it hadn't occurred to me to call them "vulgar"!! LOL

Normally, we have little to no problems with snails or slugs...except next to my neighbor, who continues to water twice a day, in spite of our 10+ year drought!

I think they caught the ferry and came over here! ;o)

yeah Beattie...i think I meant ugly there

snails were here long before us and personaly like most life i find them facinating even thowthey end up in my fishesgratefull belly . the worst thing on the planet and for the planet is definatly the human . snails dont eat more than they need and they dont make war or rob, steal and lye to you or have snail world wars and murder millions of each other just like every other animal apart from aparrently the cleverest . truth hurts i guess and im guilty myself thow not as bad as a lot of people .

take your point Noseypotter..but I don't think the world snail population will suffer as a result of them being barred from my premises alone ;-)

Hi Pete, I must admit that I have noticed less of the slimeys here. There's fewer in my polyt, but that may be because I have wired all the tables with copper scourer, but there's certainly less outside in the backyard, but that may not only be due to the hot spell, but also helped by my troop of ducks who have taken to wandering about my borders looking for the odd snack.
