Victoria Plum tree - no flowers

I have a victoria plum tree in a large pot - bought and planted and lightly pruned last year. This year it is growing well but there is no blossom and I believe it should flower in April / May. Any ideas why there is no blossom and what I can do about it? Thanks

it would do much better in the ground and i believe thow i could be wrong that the fruit grows on last years new growth which you have pruned of . also it just mite not be ready yet as you say its growing well .

If you only bought last year then it is possibly too young to be flowering and fruiting yet. Unless it is on a dwarf rootstock it is going to be extremely unhappy in a pot.

great minds moon grower lol .

Thank you both very much for your advice. The plum tree is on dwarf rootstock and is in a huge pot with John Innes No 3 compost. I am trying to follow what I can learn from books and the internet regarding growing this and an apple tree I bought also last year, which is also on dwarf root stock and is potted up similarly. Apple tree is growing fine and blossoming. I will just have to be patient and hope for better luck next year with the plum tree.

Everyone has a different idea of what a "huge" pot is. Is it at least 2 feet tall and wide?

iveseen a huge pot at colchester zoo that was about 5 feet tall and probably weighed a couple of tons thats what i call huge . yourwelcome to the advise helenr .

Yep, I'd call that huge, too, Np! : )
On the other hand, some of my customers think that any pot bigger than 9 inches across is "huge".

how big is it lol ?

Thank you for your comments. I can confirm that the pot the tree is in holds 90 litres plus of John Innes No 3 compost so I assume it should be big enough! Incidentally since we have had the storms in Scotland recently the leaves are looking decidedly curled up, shredded and sorry looking!

That is inevitable Helen and the tree will recover. Just make sure you keep it well watered.

LOL Moon grower - no problem with keeping it well watered recently as we have had rain every day for the last 3 weeks! Thanks again for your help. Helen

You have also had strong winds which will be drying things out in containers very rapidly.

Thanks Moon grower I will watch out for that.
