My mum, who is not a gardener, filled a tray with compost, through pansy seeds on top, poured water on and shoved them under the hedge and forgot about them - no cover or anything. I told her they wouldn't do any good and that she needed to care for them and provide some warmth and humidity.
I ended up eating my words - they did pretty well! Maybe they are one of those things that just thrive on neglect?

I GET THE SAME THING WITH THE SUMMER VARIETY ,AS SOON AS I SPY ANY GREEN FLY ,OUT COMES THE DIRTY DISH WATER INTO MY SPRAY BOTTLE AND AFTER A GOOD SQUIRT THE GREEN FLY TEND TO GET THE MESSAGE AND LEAVE MY PANSIES ALONE ..TRY IT AND SEE..GOOD LUCK.

Try not to splash them when watering... use a drip hose. or conversely Try cooking your soil...place a piece of black plastic over it and let the sun raise the temp for awhile then, poke holes through the plastic and plant your pansies, then mulch to hide the plastic. I have filled black plastic garbage bags with soil, poked holes and planted seedlings..they come along really well. the advice from Happy about dish soap is good too. I tried this and it worked for me.

I believe Black Spot remains i9n the ground after a crop has been removed and you need to wait several years before replanting that area or changing the soil.
