hello help please, i have a fabulas pink cherry blossem tree not very big (7ft tall) 10 years old pruned for over hang when i brought the tree the man said no problem with the roots , but my neighbour wants me to cut down because she thinks in twenty years it might disrupt foundations , i can understand where she is coming from but i realy dont want to cut it down, so my question is are cherry trees known for damaging foundations , regards deborah

she cant make you cut it down, she can only ask nicely. we have had a conservatory built about 18ft from an old [30+] cherry tree and only found minor roots in the soil. the lilac was more of a problem.
personally i dont think there is much to worry about.

The roots will not spread much more than the canopy, so 7 foot tall is not going to even reach her house. Tell her you will wait until it happens!

Not sure if this helps...but in France...you are allowed to plant any tree, as long as it is 3 metres from your boundary, or any other installation...so I guess that 3 metres is the magic number!
