We have a very large Garrya Elliptica which we pruned after the catkins finished in late March. New growth is shooting from wherever we cut, even into really old wood and I now wish we had been bolder which would have improved the shape. Prepared to sacrifice some catkins next year. Can we prune further now?

Thanks Bamboo. There will be a considerable amount of mature wood left even after further pruning so will get some catkins next year and sacrifice worth it to imprive shape of shrub. Thanks again for replying.

Brief update. Followed Bamboo's instructions and already the shrub is looking much better. New growth all over.

Thanks for the update, Wyken - hopefully you'll still get plenty of catkins.

Yes, if you want to, but as you know, you run the risk of losing some catkins next year. Do it immediately though... and feed and water afterwards
