I was lucky enough to go to Chelsea flower show yesterday. I was astonished by the beds, and wonder if the planting and display of flowers and plants in those show gardens could realistically be achieved in a normal garden? I have returned to my garden, thinking, how will i ever!

Remember that many of the plants are grown in somewhat artificial conditions to bring them on or hold them back to all be in flower or a certain size this week. So realistically no , not the exact display but the style of planting and colour and shape combinations are what you can perhaps try and achieve. I suppose that's what we all try and do .....and find so difficult to get it right.

Our friend hires refrigerated units to keep plants in to stop them going over for Chelsea!

Don't forget these are Show Gardens, designed to be at their peak for one week in May. How many flowers would there be in them in a month's time? As MG says, they are good for ideas but not for slavishly copying

My plant knowledge is lacking...so it was hard to know which flowers where flowering naturally and which where forced.
I guess i don't want to slavishly try and copy such displays or think it is possible to recreate in a natural garden the displays shown at the flower show.
The shape, plant and colour combinations is what can be learned from maybe more so than displays of flowers then. Thank you.

Yes you can learn a lot from shape, plant and colour combinations. It might make you think you want a 'hot' garden or a 'cool' one, or how you will use hard landscaping to gain the effect you want.

I agree wholeheartedly with Andrew's remark - when I was there last year, a novice gardening friend wanted to copy the planting - until I pointed out that if she came back in 2 weeks (even if the flower show were still there) there'd be nothing in flower...

Taking what you see at Chelsea or Gardening Scotland and then turning it into something in your own garden is a challenge. I hope you took lots of photos to give you some ideas. But even if you just came away with a couple of ideas it will have been worth it for you.
