We want to plant under a long established fir tree. The soil quality is quite poor. Would anybody be able to suggest which plants would do well under these conditions.

Symphoricarpus [snowberry] does well in this situation, i grow them under the canopy of a ceder tree [dry shade] and they do really well, its decidouous and has small whit/pink floewrs, followed by largish white berrys through the winter, looks great once the leaves drop and brightens up a shady situation, however it all depends on the trees branches, have the lower ones died off over the years so that you have quite alot of the trunk exposed, this is important has it will alow some light in, julien.

Mahonia repens grows wild under the pine and fir trees of northern Arizona, so it may be worth a try.

Epimedium seems to like the dry shade here. Mine is doing remarkably well under my Douglas fir. Mahonia is also good as Tugbrethil suggests. They grow wild here too under trees and it is very much like Arizona where I live.

I to have a Symphoricarpus [snowberry] beside a 30 ft specimen fir tree. I did not plant it, it came under the wooden fence fr0m the garden next door. Unfortunately it thrives in shade, sun, dry or moist conditions and I cannot get rid of it, I find it a real thug as it is spreading underground everywhere.
Surprisingly I have a Spiraea bumalda 'Goldmound' (Spirea) which was planted 10 years ago beside a fir tree and this has grown from under the fir (which is now 25ft) and flowers very well.

you could always put some nice big pots near the base and plant shade lovers or a raised garden .

I suggested the euphorbia because I thought you wanted something low growing. I really wouldn't go for the snowberry unless you have lots of room and don't mind being taken over - it spreads like wildfire (sorry Julien)

Glad I am not the only one who hates Snowberry Steragram. Spiraea bumalda 'Goldmound' only grows to 18" but twice as wide.

Is there any way of getting to page 34 without having to go through them all a page at a time?

Go to the last page - 47 and you can go back alternate pages thats the quickest way I know.

Euphorbia robbiae is the only one i can think of that would flourish under those conditions.
