I've recently moved to a new house and have no idea what this plant is. It grows to about 3ft tall. The flowers are purple daisy like with yellow centres which open in the sun. The seed heads are large resembling large very large "dandelion clocks" and it obviously self sets freely. Can anyone identify it for me please.

It looks rather like Salsify.

Yes, Goatsbeard, or Wild Salsify (Tragopogon porrifolius). The cultivated form has duller flowers, and isn't quite as enthusiastic about self seeding--also tastier roots! : )

Sometimes also called 'Jack-go-to-bed-at -noon' In our parts at least. I love this common name.

How do I say thanks?
