Asclepias tuberosa in the UK?

Asclepias tuberosa - has anyone tried growing this in the UK? I have my eye on some seeds on e-bay to grow to attract butterflys, but what I read say they can be tricky. Any info appreciated :-)

Thanks for that Andrew. From what I've read they like dry conditions, so if next summer is anything like the last two, probably not worth bothering with this plant. It dosent seem to be widely grown in this country - so maybe I'll take the hint!

I have grown asclepia tuberosa for several years, and it always flowers well. I think it likes hot summers rather than dry ones. I grow it as an annual, but also keep some over winter in a frost-free greeenhouse - they have a head start then. A really colourful plant. The sap may be an irritant.

Thanks for that Gray. I see you're in Leicester, which I think is further north than Hereford, so maybe it would be ok here. The ones you overwinter in your greenhouse - do you have them planted out in the summer then lift them before the frosts, or do you keep them in containers?
Do you find they attract lots of butterflys?
Thanks again, Sid.

I plant them directly into the garden, as that makes it easier to water them. Some are lifted and potted late autumn, then its just a matter of not letting them totally dry out - and die - in winter. I try to keep them as tall as poss, but toips often die off so they then get cut back and hopefully shoot again in spring. Not all survive.
I haven't noticed butterflies on them at all, but we certainly get lots of caterpillars on brugs and cleome.

Thanks for the helpful info Gray :-)

I've tried it but without success - can't get it through a winter. It is very late into growth so maybe I gave up too soon and planted something else in the space
