I have had a cordeline plant in my garden for many many years, unfortunately this years bad weather has made the leaves turn yellow, I cut them with a pair of sharp shears, but now it has gone all mushy at the top. Although there are quite a few strong shoots further down the plant. Shall I cut it down to the shoots which are about a foot down from the top.

Agree with Moongrower's advice, but would add angle the cut to enable rain to run off if at all possible.
