Hosta difficulty.
This hosta, having survived the dangers of the Spring when it first emerged from hibernation has now been subjected to rearguard attack and is being chomped on by an unknown assailant. I have cleared the ground under it and lightly forked it over to see if there are any baddies lurking in the soil until sunset. I also went out with a torch after sunset yesterday but could not discover any villains at their evil work. Does anyone have any suggestions that might help me deal with the problem? It might also be helpful to know that this is the only victim (apart from an Acanthus nearby) all the other Hostas, about 30, are completely undamaged.

It looks like your classic slug damage to me .... I always find that it is the little blighters that are the worse the big fat ones don't seem to be too bad.
The damage could have been done when the leaves were all tightly curled and small up before unfurling and low and behold what once was a small hole is now a big hole !
Might be worth putting some ferric iron slug pellets ( the non wildlife damaging ones) , coffee grounds or eggshells whatever you fave method of keeping the beasties away from your precious hostas.
