Hi Welshlass. You don't say how big it is.

If it's still a baby (which it could be if you have never over-wintered it before) then under glass. Greenhouse or cold frame are fine. At a pinch then mulch it then a good fleece.

If you have inherited a full grown one then cut back the dying leaves in autumn (now). In frost-prone areas protect the crown of the plant with a dry winter mulch such as straw, then maybe fleece to keep the straw in place. Or you can mulch it on the crown then tie the bunched leaves over the mulch, much like a tree fern. They may get a bit battered but should be OK. Really depends how frost prone your area is. Just keep the frost off it.

Hi, you need to protect the crown of the plant. I bend the leaves of the plant over the crown to protect from frost and leave it like this until Spring. Dont know if you are in a cold area of the country, I am in the Midlands and find this procedure to be adequate, athough my plants are quite established and have plenty of leaves.

I know John, SNAP. Its kind of weird, you obviously have more knowledge than me though but we have interests in the same plants.

Welcome to GOY Welshlass from a gardening friend in Wales. I have planted two Gunneras in my Wet and shady garden project area this year. The first photo of them is on my site. It is the picture with the umbrella on. I did not know the answer to your question but I do now thanks to your responders. Thank you all.

Hello Welshlass, we get frosts as early as October and as late as the end of May, so I'm sure if you follow John's and my advice, you'll be Ok. Regards, Dawn
