Can I plant my Ash tree sapling that I have been given in a large pot? I really want to keep it alive and Ideally choose the location in the garden at a later date. It is about 75cm tall and arrived in the post today. Any other tips very welcome! Thanks.

Thanks. It is a Fraxinus Excelsior which I think grows quite big so want to think about where in the garden would be best for it.

Best time to plant trees in the ground is autumn.

Hope you have a very very big garden because it is a very big tree. After all the word Excelsior means Extra Large.

If it ever gets too big remember that ash is one of the very best firewoods because it burns well green instead of having to let it dry for a year like other timber!

And ash trees are notorious for "throwing" branches - they drop large boughs with no warning at all, so don't put anything valuable & breakable underneath it. We had a 40 footer at the end of our last garden's lawn and it shed a large branch (6 inch-plus diameter) every five years or so.
I also hope you have a large garden.

Thanks all. It was given in memory of a very special person so I have to plant it. We have a fairly big garden but also a house with an open fire so maybe it can look nice whilst being constantly trimmed back and supplying wood for the fire!

You haven't said what variety it is, so I don't know how big its meant to get nor how rapidly it might grow, but putting it in a larger pot will be okay for up to 3 or 4 months, provided the pot's large enough to accommodate good root growth and you keep it well watered, I'd imagine.
