I don't know about normal, but I've had similar experience with Mrs. Bradshaw, and other plants. Not sure what happens really - I could speculate, but I don't know.

in my experience, Mrs Bradshaw likes to wind gardeners up and she succeeded with me last year - I wrote a mini blog about her.
Buds always look yellow, but flowers v nice deep orangey red still when fully open!
Hope yours behaves herself too.

I know what you mean. My Mrs Bradshaw have all come up red as usual but I split a purple Bill Wallis geranium and the new plants have come up whitish pink. And my ruby red Weigela that has flowered ruby for years and years has flowered pink this year.
I look forward to reading some answers to your question.
