can i split a fern rootball without damaging it?

Division of clumps is an accepted way of propagating ferns. Commercially it is usually done by collecting and planting spores because that way you get hundreds of baby plants from 1 fern but if you only want a couple then just make sure that each separated clump has plenty of root on it.
