Thank you Bernard, your reply gave us some insight into our problem with these beetles. We do indeed have a Rape seed field opposite our house. Do you know if these beetles are a short term problem, or if they last all summer long. We had a barbie with lots of family last Sunday without a beetle in sight, come the following day there where thousands of them on the plants and on the house and us. Were hoping they will disappear quickly

My sister has the same trouble - she lives in Kent, surrounded by fields, and at certain times during the summer, they're plagued with what they call 'storm flies' - tiny black things. I can't remember what she told me happens,whether it gets worse just after the rape is cropped or while its in flower, but certainly when the weather's hot, they notice them more. I think its part of the price one pays for living in a rural area.
