Hi all,
Have any of you got a solar fountain? i am thinking of getting one for the small 'pond' i have (its really an old bowl of my grandmothers !!) it keeps getting mosquito larvae in it and i read that they don't like moving water, have read mixed reviews just wondered if any of you have one?

Hallo I had one, it looked liked a water lily leaf, as long as the sun was shining it was OK, so put it in a spot that is sunny all day, I loved hearing the little fountain, but somehow it got broken when we moved and upto now I havn´t replaced it.

if you add a few drops of olive oil in the water that will stop the mossies in still water.good luck.

I have been looking out for one for ages but the only ones i have seen are rather tacky with plastic flowers or worse. I'm waiting for an undecorated one! n What I woyld realkly orefer is just the oump to make a little trickly waterfall.

I seriously doubt you will get that from a solar feature. But you can get ones that are just a little fountain with no tacky bits. Snag is as I already said they only work when the sun is actually on them...

Moon grower, I only wanted to have a few drops falling off a stone, not a great waterfall. Do you know where you can get just the pump without the tat?

@ Steragram...try ebay...loads of pumps there and not expensive.

I looked at solar water pumps in a specialist shop last year.
They dont always need full sun (light is enough) but full sun = full charge, but if the sun stops shining then it uses up the battery charge
Fully charged they run for 6 hours max so they wont run through the night and probably wont run in a dull early morning either.

mosquitos need still water to breed so that is true .the trouble is i dont think the solar pumps have enough grunt realy as the water realy needs to be turning over to stop mosquitos . the water is always going to find the easiest route to and from your pump so is likley to just turn the water over right next to the pump . this wont stop the insect life as its more like rain to them. pumps outlets are far better the opposit end of the inlet so you get a lot of water movement and not many dead spots .

Well it will only work when the sun is actually shining... so there will be long periods when it doesn't.
