any idea why my broad bean plants have loads of big fat pods with no beans in them....just little black seeds?

Is there anything I can do to prevent this next year? I've planted nasturtiums around them to encourage bees and discourage blackfly and I didn't net them. I there anything else I should consider?

Not really... In fact thinking about it if the flowers weren't pollenated the pods wouldn't have formed. Very odd.

Probably the pods were not fertilised.
