I have been given a selection of usable but slightly scruffy plastic garden tubs. Does anybody know if they can be painted and if so what sort of paint should be used?

B&Q do a product called Plastikote to paint plant pots. Google 'painting plastic plantpots' and you will get some more ideas.

Plasticote's the name of the spray I use - they do gloss and enamel in the range.

I always use spray enamel paint on mine, though even a gloss spray will do.
