Flowers - and that's true of absolutely every plant on the planet - flowers are produced, they get pollinated, fruit follows (though sometimes as berries). All 'fruit' is, really, is just a seed pod, not always edible - in the case of courgettes, obviously they are, and a nice chunky seed case for us to eat as well.
