I've found a well of some sort on my plot, how can I test to see that the water is safe to use? It looks clear and there's no smell coming of it.What would you say?

I hope your well turns out to have potable (usable) water then you can use for the garden etc. but you do need to get it checked. The Environment Protection Agency can point you at whom to ask.

If you tell your local council that you intend to use the water for domestic consumption then the Environmental Health Departmant will come out and test the water. There will probably be a charge for this but the information gained will be well worth it.

Potable literally means drinkable, so even if it doesn't pass tests for human consumption, it may well be suitable for watering the garden, flushing the loo, etc.

If it has high metals levels, I wouldn't use it for watering anything edible!

Me neither.

If your property is over 100 years old then it probably does have a well in the grounds. Whilst it may look clear and not smell, it may have bacteria and chemicals in it-am sure e.coli live in water and heavy metals like cadmium and lead are commonly found in it. You can self test it from an online source or you can get the council to test it for you for free as Councils legally have to monitor the quality of all private water supplies under the Private Water Supply Regulations 2001.
