what other pests eat plants in troughs other than slugs and snails?

Caterpillars come to mind. The moth/butterfly/insect flies in and leaves the eggs on the plant. Just took some off my salix.

Vine weevil? Root aphids in the roots? Depends what the symptoms are really.
