i have two japanese maples and both have died back in just one branch/area it now appears that some parts of my virginia creeper is suffering the same fate, any ideas anyone, i`m confused and desperate

Could be loads of things, lack of water as Moon Growe has said - esp if both are next to a wall.
Other possibilities are weedkiller, disturbing roots (Acers and creepers have shallow roots), winter damage (can take a while for damage to show) and damage to bark.

Or wind damage there have been some serious winds this year...

You don't say where you are in the UK if it is the drought area then lack of water is the probable cause.
