What would be an ideal small tree or shrub to plant at the edge of a natural lake? I'm looking for something which not grow to to more than 2m, and will be easy to maintain.

I think a Japanese maple looks great reflected over water - especially during autumn. You can keep them in pots to keep their size to 2 metres, though they are slow growing.
