Is it ok to put up a wooden fence next to a row of conifers, and if it is, which is the best type of fence panel to use?

Yes, no worries in putting a wooden fence up. Type is up to your self and situation but I would put a picket fence up to allow the wind to freely pass through.

Thank you Kildermorie, thats good news, I was worried about the trees possibly breaking the fence. I'm a bit of a novice with this type of thing. Thanks again for taking the time to answer my question, it is much appreciated.

Your very welcome. If it helps, in woodlands a ranch style wooden fence is used (http://www.south-london-fencing.co.uk/ranch-fencing.html). It does depend what you need the fence for. I would avoid the lapping style fence as it channels wind and has a tendency to blow down in strong winds.
