I just bought a Flamingo Acer thinking it would be a nice shrub that wouldn't get more than 4 ft tall. Now that I've done some research it seems that they grow into proper trees! Is is possible to keep these small by pruning them back regularly?

You can prune an acer but it needs doing very carefully or it will soon lokk messy. It is better if you can just let it grow to its full glory.

yes. you can use them for bonsai so it should be relatively easy to keep them at the height and spread you want, just be sure to keep on top of it all.
