It would definitely be an advantage, to learn as much as possible about plants and the habitats they thrive in.

Check local colleges for horticulture, landscape, design courses, day courses etc

Think about it this way - if you were a well-off possibly retired person who fancied having someone in to landscape your garden - would you go for the guy with the qualifications or the other guy? Personally I'd go for the one recommended by a friend or with a proven track record, so I guess it's not a clearcut issue......
