I am growing carrots for the first time & i notice that they are growing near the surface and are twisted. What have I done wrong - can I rectify?

Nothing you can do now unfortunately. Carrots need a very, very, fine tilth. They do best in a light sandy soil, if there is even the littlest of stones they will twist to go round it. You will always see the top of the carrot root just above ground.

did you manure the ground at all? Carrots grow forked if you have.

Exactly my point lean, means soil! The sandier the better!
