i have 3 young gardenias which look permanently on the verge of dying. when new leaves start to grow the old ones turn yellow then brown then drop off. they are in 12 inch pots in ericaceous compost with some gravel on top. they are watered regularly and are on a sunny site. what am i doing wrong

Which variety of Gardenia are they? The only one which can stand being outside is G. 'Kleims Hardy', all the others are greenhouse or conservatory plants, and they're particularly finicky about temperature.
