It's best not to, as the plant needs to build up a good root system before you stress it out with picking. It may give up if you pick it this year. Be patient!

Listen out for the weather forecast in the autumn and harvest the stalks just before the frost destroys them anyway. They might be a bit tough by then but they will stew OK.
As Volunteer says, don't pull any during the growing season as they need all the photosynthesis they can get to establish their new root system.
