I have cut down a largish shrub - just pale lemon leaves but very prickly. I cannot get the root out - what can I put on it to perhaps kill it off.

Drill into it if you can with a small or medium wood bit, depending on the size of the root, and fill up the hole/s you make with neat SBK - without spilling it on the soil around. Cover with an upturned pot and leave.
