When my dianthus get the brown and dry buds it's usually because they've got TOO dry - some of mine have this happen, some don't - depends on the drought condition of that piece of ground !

Are there little round holes in the sides of the buds? I occasionally get budworms in mine, but provado gets rid of them.

Not in mine Tug, the buds are just 'empty' as if the growth had dehydrated away.

Dianthus Pinks in the ground as yours are, withstand drought very well and hate being wet and humid conditions, both of which which can cause damage to the buds
