My Cordaline is dying too after the snow & frost of last winter. However, new shoots have started to appear at the bottom of the trunk. Is it ok to cut the top off & leave the bottom half without sealing or protecting the cut off area of the trunk?

Cut the trunk off at a slight angle if you can, to allow rain to run off.

Yes, it is ok to cut it, no need to seal as the center of the trunk is very soft. I had 7 of them, lost all, but 3 of them are growing back from the bottom, I have cut them all down to about one foot, I am expecting them all to grow back :))) I've posted a picture this evening.
