I'm sure strawberry plants are hardy - they're grown (or used to be grown) in open fields in Cambridgeshire. They're grown in polytunnels these days for a longer cropping season and ease of picking.

Each plant is good for several years, so start new plants from runners every year or two to keep the fruit coming.
